The Task

Your first hurdle is to figure out what size brownies you are going to make for the students. You can choose to make large brownies and get 15 per pan. You can make medium brownies and cut a pan into 20. If you want to, you can even make small brownies and get 30 to a pan.

Your second hurdle is that you might not have made homemade brownies before, and, there are no recipe books in the kitchen. Luckily, Chef has given you the URL's of great online brownie recipe sites, and he has promised you that you will be able to find recipes there.

Your third hurdle is that he needs to know how much of which ingredients to buy.

Lastly since it was the three of you that got you into this, Chef wants each of you to rate the others in your group on how much they participated and contributed.

The Process

This is a team project, and you will be assigned into groups of three. Each group will do the following:

Decide what size brownies you are going to make and answer the following questions in a paragraph using a Microsoft Word:

  1. How many pans of brownies do you need to make?
  2. What fraction of your pan is one sigle brownie?
  3. Is there more than 1 way to cut a pan of brownies into the # of brownies you have chosen?

You will go online and choose a brownie recipie and have it checked by your teacher before you print. Then:

  1. Figure out how much of which ingredients are needed for the amount of brownies and brownie recipe that you are using. (Show all of your calculations on lined paper and attach them to your Word document!)
  2. Provide a summary of the ingredients for a shopping list in table inside your Word document.
  3. After your calculations are completeded, each team member will type a short note on how much their two partners contributed and participated.

Conclusion

The skills that you learn in math class do have applications in the real world, and the Internet is a great resource for finding things that you need, even when you didn't know that you needed them. How would you answer the following questions? Answer these questions in a paragraph in your Word document.

  1. Did you have any idea that there were so many different types of brownies?
  2. What would you need to do if Chef informed you that you needed to make brownies for 480 people?
  3. Suppose you were in charge of buying the ingredients, what size would you make?
  4. Suppose you have to help make the brownies, what size would you make?
  5. Suppose you don't have to do any work, you just get to eat the brownies, what size would you make?
