Understanding Math

Multiplication By 10s

How to multiply by tens:

  • Move the decimal point one place to the left in the number ending in zero.
  • For example: 8 * 10 would become 8*1
  • Do the multiplication (8*1=8)
  • Move the decimal point of the product one place to the right (80)

Exponents

Exponents are used when a number is multiplied by itself multiple times. Instead of writing it out it is written another way:
3*3*3=3^3
When Evaluating exponents just multiply the number by itself as many times as the exponent shows:
0^2=0*0=0
1^2=1*1=1
2^2=2*2=4
3^2=3*3=9
4^2=4*4=16
5^2=5*5=25
6^2=6*6=36
7^2=7*7=49
8^2=8*8=64
9^2=9*9=81
10^2=10*10=100
11^2=11*11=121
12^2=12*12=144

Evaluating Equations

An equation is a mathematical statement that has two expressions separated by an equal sign.

For Example: 5X+7=32
First subtract 7 from both sides of the equation: 5X+7-7=32-7 or 5X=25
Next divide 5 from each side: 5X/5=25/5
Then simplify the equation: X=25/5 or X=5
Finally plug the value of X back into the equation: 5(5)+7=32
